Located in the lush Rwenzururu sub-region, Uganda's tropical climate and fertile soils offer a veritable paradise of biodiversity for cacao growing.

The Latitude Trade Company cooperative in Kasese is dedicated to the meticulous fermentation and drying of the beans, ensuring perfect maturation of the aromas. The cacao from this region is fine and elaborate, revealing notes of cacao fruit nectar, banana and a creaminess reminiscent of cream cheese.

This terroir represents a captivating foray into the diversity of the region's Trinitario cacaos.

We carefully select our beans to provide a minimally processed Grand Cru, guaranteeing an authentic and sophisticated taste experience.

The beans are gently roasted at low temperatures to preserve their full spectrum of flavors, resulting in 100% pure cocoa nibs.

TRINITARIO & AMELONADO

The characteristic natural fruitiness of cacao from the Semuliki forest and a gentle roasting accentuate the tropical touch of the beans. We detect notes of cacao fruit nectar, banana and cream cheese.

THE COOPERATIVE

In the town of Kasese, near the famous Semuliki forest in Uganda's tropical and rainy Rwrenzururu sub-region, a social enterprise called Latitude sources wet cacao beans from over 4,500 small farmers.

Latitude ferments each farmer's crop in crates built from local eucalyptus, then blends the beans from several farms after fermentation and drying, creating a uniform and consistently excellent product.

HARVESTING

The team plans to rehabilitate around 1,000 hectares of the old plantation over the next 3 to 5 years.

In addition, the Governor laid the foundation stone for a new small-scale chocolate factory on the plantation grounds, which will produce chocolate for the local Indonesian market.

With this, the team hopes to create employment opportunities for the younger generation and reinforce the image of cacao as a local food crop.

An Eden in its own right, since their arrival in the 1800s, European researchers have recorded 110 species of mammal, 350 species of butterfly and 320 species of bird in this region.

The region enjoys an equatorial climate, with evenly distributed rainfall throughout the year, strong sunshine and no strong winds. The trade winds do, however, provide a breeze between July and September.
