BENEFITS
Guayusa (Ilex guayusa) is a lesser-known sister of ilex paraguariensis (yerba maté), and is rich in polyphenols and several antioxidants.
The leaves also contain chlorogenic acids and theobromine (also found in cacao), theophylline, vitamins C and D, essential minerals such as potassium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, chromium, and 15 essential amino acids, including leucine.
According to some scientific reports, Guayusa is the "healthiest infusion in the world", containing 50% more antioxidants than green tea, almost as much caffeine as coffee, and vitamins and minerals not found in other teas.
Although, strictly speaking, it is not a tea, but an infusion of leaves.
USE
It is used as an infusion in the rituals & ceremonies of the indigenous populations of the Jivaro and Kichwa tribes.
Indians used to drink Guayusa before strenuous physical or mental exertion. Being very low in tannin, there is no risk of obtaining a bitter drink by letting it infuse too long.
To prepare Guayusa, put 2 to 4 teaspoons of Guayusa in a 200-300 ml cup (use a tea ball).
Add boiling water and leave to infuse for around 5 minutes.the drink offers a creamy, flowery taste, combining perfectly with fruits, juices, sugar and herbs, including Yerba Mate.
Guayusa can be served hot or cold.
